They generally just don’t give a damn. It takes FEDERAL MANDATE to get these people to treat prisoners like human beings, protect the vulnerable ones (who are mostly just mentally ill,) segregate violent offenders from non-violent ones, MAKE LOGICAL DISTINCTIONS on what constitutes violent offenses vs. nonviolent ones, etc. Part of it is the culture, too. Alabamians in general don’t see people who commit crimes as people. They’re not OBLIGATED to, don’t get me wrong. But there’s generally a very black-and-white view of people who are incarcerated. Like if you’re in the pen for 20+ years, in the same cell block as people who commit armed robbery/capital murder/etc., but you’re in there for nonviolent marijuana charges, then “YOU DESARV IT, IT’S THE LAW!” Because LOTS of Alabamians are JUST THAT DAFT and completely lacking in empathy.
